Fortis Foundation 1st Annual Golf Relay

Benefitting Community Medical Center Foundation

The Purpose.... $10,000 for a Simulation Baby (Read On!)

So we know this is going to be a crazy and hopefully EPIC event… But why are we doing it?

RWJ Community Medical Center is making leaps and bounds to provide our area with the advanced healthcare our community needs and deserves. But not every need can be met with our current healthcare system. It’s support from people like you that improve the care CMC is able to provide. The Fortis Foundation is committed to Community Medical Center Foundation and the Emerging Leaders of the Foundation. The Emerging Leaders’ Mission has been to support Mother-Baby initiatives at the hospital. The most recent funded project of the Emerging Leaders was a lactation room at the hospital.

At the last CMC Foundation board meeting, a new “ask” was presented by a leading physician of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. As you may know, CMC has welcomed resident physicians across many specialties, significantly advancing their mark in NJ healthcare. CMC sees more than 35 children daily in its Emergency Department, amounting to approximately 13,000 pediatric cases per  year. As this number continues to grow annually, it is essential that our residents gain hands-on experience. To support their training and ensure consistent, high quality care, “Simulation Babies” will allow for repetitive practice in a safe, controlled environment. (And yes, this is how medicine works. Under strict observation, resident physicians learn how to become incredible doctors. Teaching hospitals are renowned for providing the best care as the best docs are teaching them! We are very fortunate to now be a teaching hospital!)

So back to the mission! Simulation babies will help CMC’s resident physicians practice surgeries and procedures that they otherwise not be able to observe regularly. What does this mean to us? Whether you have children, grandchildren, nieces or nephews, at some point you will likely know a child that needs immediate, and maybe lifesaving care. When time is of the essence, we want to have the best care in our backyard. These simulation babies are one small step in building a hub for premier pediatric emergency medicine at Community Medical Center.

Our goal is to raise $10,000, which is the cost of this specialized simulation doll. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s worth every penny if it improves the outcome of even ONE pediatric emergency.

Below is an example of how an ER improved their pediatric outcomes with the use of Simulation Patients

Know Before You Go...

We know what you’re thinking… What am I getting myself into?!

RELAX… This is going to be a blast. And you’re going to be part of Golf Outing History! As far a we are aware, this will be the FIRST EVER Golf Relay Outing! The pros have done it on a hole to break the Guiness Book of World Records. The Fortis Foundation has a Golf Relay Challenge at our Annual Charity Outing. But no one (as far as we know) has hosted an entire outing of Golf Relay. This wont be 5 hours of golf where you have to sacrifice your entire day and have to bring your best golf game. This is fun and exciting. Also good to note, this is NOT SPEED GOLF. A pep in your step will certainly help, but running is not necessary at all! If your team plays well, you may only have to hit the ball 9 times! …So how does it work?

Register as a foursome or we’ll match you with other golfers. The outing we take place on the first 9 Holes of Bey Lea with a Shot Gun start at 4PM.

STRATEGY: Your foursome will decide the order in which your players will shoot. This is a relay, so you will only play one ball as a team. On each respective hole you can change the order as you see fit. During each hole you must maintain the same order that you chose for that hole. Here’s the idea:

THE SETUP: Adam (A), Bruce (B), Chris (C) and Dave (D) are a team. Adam drives the ball wicked far so he is going first. Bruce has a great iron and wood game so he is going second. Chris is great at the flop shot so he is going third. And Dave is a mini golf pro and is best at putting. All 4 golfers arrange themselves on the hole. Adam is at the tee box, Bruce stands about 220 yards out with a few clubs and a back up ball. Chris and Dave stand around the green with their wedges and putters. (You may bring as many clubs with you as you’d like in the event you need to hit a shot from an unexpected location).

THE EXECUTION: The clock starts when Adam’s driver makes contact with the ball off the tee. As the ball heads out into the fairway, Bruce moves towards where he believes the ball is going to land. When the balls comes to a stop, Bruce takes the second shot towards the green. Chris takes the 3rd shot, either chipping on, or putting. And Dave does the same. If they do not complete the hole by David, Adam must take the next shot, then Bruce, rotating in, so on and so forth until the ball is holed out (logistically after Adam tees off, he should drive up towards Bruce). A volunteer will be timing the hole and record your time. Please record them as well.

THE RULES:

– If you complete the hole in PAR, your time is recorded as the exact time on the stopwatch.

– If you complete the hole in BIRDIE, your time is recorded as your time -30 Seconds.

– If you complete the hole in EAGLE, your time is recorded as -60 seconds or ZERO (whichever is lower)

– For every stroke OVER PAR, your time is recorded as your time +15 Seconds per stroke over par

– If a ball goes OUT OF BOUNDS OR IN THE HAZARD and you would like to drop a ball, your team will take a penalty stroke (like normal golf), but the teammate that was supposed to hit the shot can drop the ball and hit. As an example, if Adam takes a drive off the tee box and the ball slices out of bounds, Bruce can drop a new ball and hit it (laying 2, hitting 3).

– If you reach 4 minutes on a hole, please pick up your ball and 4 minutes will be recorded on the scorecard. If you unintentionally go out of order on a hole, record 4 minutes as your score. If you would like to finish the hole after 4 minutes (for fun), you may so long as there is not a team waiting behind you.

MULLIGANS:

Mulligans will be sold for $10 each. Each player may purchase a maximum of 5 mulligans each. If you use a mulligan, you may hit another ball after your turn. This saves your next teammate from having to come back to a ball you may have topped or hit out of bounds, for example. The clock will keep running, but no penalty stroke will be enforced. Please hand your mulligan ticket to the Timer at the green when you use it. Any unused Mulligans can be turned in at your final hole and will reduce your final score by 10 seconds per mulligan!

Each Cart will have the above rules… But here are the Main things to focus on:

– On each hole, stay in your rotation (it can be different on each hole)

– If you need to take a drop, the player that would have gone next can still go next (add a penalty stroke)

– Max time to record on a hole is 4 minutes

– Use your mulligans to hit again for no penalty (turn in unused mulligans for a time reduction!)

*Each foursome should elect a CAPTAIN (choose the player most familiar with golf). We will have a brief meeting before teeing off to go over the format. This is the start of something special and NEW so we want to pull this off as best as possible!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, HAVE FUN!!!

WINNING TEAM WILL HAVE THEIR NAMES ENGRAVED ON A COMMEMORATIVE TROPHY THAT WILL BE DISPLAYED AT COMMUNITY MEDICAL CENTER!
